Getting information on how many cage-free egg farms exist in Canada is not an easy task. Many non-organic egg farms in Canada have small flocks (below 399 hens) so they are not required to register with the provincial egg marketing board or any other public record. In this case, farmers’ markets or word of mouth are the best way to discover where they are located. Those with certified organic free-range flocks are, however, typically listed on their provincial organic association's web site.
VHS has made an attempt to gather the names of the 100% cage-free farms that we do know about. There are at least forty-two 100% cage-free farms in BC, and another forty-five in the rest of Canada, for a total of eighty-seven fully cage-free farms.

We have not visited the majority of these farms, so cannot verify the conditions on each farm. However, those with either organic or BCSPCA certification are inspected and audited on an annual basis by a 3rd party, so can provide consumers with a guarantee that standards are being upheld. For all others, please visit the farm or check local references for more information.
Please be aware that not all farms produce a sufficient quantity of eggs for drop-in visitors, and much of their supply is often already spoken for by local restaurants and grocers. Please call ahead to the farm to see if they honour farmgate sales and to see if they can fulfill your request.
