October 19, 2007 - SPUD joins push for a cage-free Canada

National Campaign Exposes Hard-Boiled Truth
On small local farms, chickens can often be seen dust-bathing, nesting, walking and pecking around the barnyard. Unfortunately, the majority of eggs sold in Canada come from battery egg farms. Battery cages for hens measure approximately 16" by 18" with sloping wire floors. They provide a barren space of between 432 and 483 cm squared per bird, with five to seven birds confined to each cage.

 

Put The Chicken Before the Egg
The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) has launched a National “Chicken Out!” campaign to end the use of battery cages. VHS promotes cage-free alternatives such as organic, free-range, free-run eggs and egg substitutes. SPUD is very proud to support this initiative! (SPUD only sells local cage-free eggs. Check them out in your area.)

 

Speak Up and Speak Out!
Take a stand against battery cages. Ask your municipal council to request that all city-run facilities use only cage-free eggs. The BC cities of Richmond and Vancouver, and the municipality of Whistler have already done it. It’s easier than you think!
