March 4, 2007 - The Evil of Eggs from Caged Hens
Controversial national video challenges Food Service Expo attendees to question status quo
(Vancouver, BC) Foodies attending the BC Food Service Expo will be confronted by a giant chicken as the Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) releases a controversial national video revealing the cruelty of egg production and the ethical dilemma facing people who want to buy more humane eggs.
WHERE: B.C. Place Stadium (main entrance Beatty @ Robson)
WHEN: Sunday, March 4, 11:30 AM
WHAT: Video release on body-screen; Vancouver icon six-foot chicken, Henny
In a 2006 Decima Research poll, 80 per cent of consumers stated it is unacceptable to confine animals in cages for food production. “However, consumers face a difficult and confusing choice at the grocery store,” states Bruce Passmore. “Our humorous video shows a baffled consumer trying to make a decision – choosing between the ‘good’ egg and the ‘evil’ egg. Graphic and disturbing images of a Canadian egg farm help him make up his mind to choose the more expensive, but more ethical, certified organic egg.”
VHS is also challenging Loblaw Canada, an exhibitor at the event, to use in-store signage to identify eggs from caged hens. “This would make it much easier for the consumer to make an informed choice,” continues Passmore. “We hope Loblaw will realize that consumers care when animals are tortured to produce food.”
This video, which will be widely distributed nationally, is part of a national project by the Vancouver Humane Society, Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Food Animals and Humane Society International Canada to inform the public about the cruelty of battery cages in egg production. It was produced by the trendy Vancouver company, Ion Design.
