July 13, 2007 - BCIT drops eggs from caged hens
BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) announced today that it was going cage-free.
Another educational institution has joined the ever growing list of schools eliminating or reducing their use of eggs from caged hens. BCIT, one of Canada's most respected technical institutes, has decided to drop eggs from caged hens, becoming the third institution in Canada to officially make the switch. BCIT joins over 150 other schools in North America who have also made positive changes to their egg purchasing policies.
"People are becoming more aware of where their food comes from," says Bruce Passmore, the Farm Animal Welfare Project Coordinator for the Vancouver Humane Society. "It's encouraging that BCIT has seen the value in dropping eggs from caged hens, a product of one of the cruelest production methods in agriculture. It is only a matter of time before all schools do the same."
The Chicken Out! project is working with schools, businesses, governments and other consumers to encourage them to eliminate their use of eggs from caged hens.
